"SCHLAG MIT SALSA" POPS CONCERT BY FRIDLEY BAND AND NORTHEAST ORCHESTRA.

Once a year for more than 20 years the Northeast Orchestra and the Fridley City Band have joined forces to present a pops concert. This year's concert will be on Sunday, March 9, 3:00 p.m. at Church of St. William, 61st Ave NE, a block east of University Avenue in Fridley. The theme of this year's concert is "Schlag Mit Salsa."

What's that mean? Schlag is a German word for whipped cream and Salsa is Spanish for a well-known spicy tomato sauce. Schlag is reminiscent of chocolate cake and whipped cream which is famous in Vienna, Austria. The Northeast Orchestra is playing a series of waltzes, many by Johann Strauss and family members, such as "On the Beautiful Blue Danube," "Roses from the South," "Voices of Spring" as well as "Morning, Noon and Night in Vienna" by Franz von Suppé and the "Radetzky March" by Johann Strauss, Sr.

The Fridley City Band will play a lot of salsa, which is also a Spanish dance, in numbers like "Amparito Roca" by Jaime Texidor, "Pirates of the Caribbean," by Klaus Badelt, "Trumpet Fiesta" by Donald Phillips, arr Richard Hayman and "Tango for Band" by Glenn Osser.

The Northeast Orchestra, based in Fridley, is in its 36th year and is directed by Dr. Jeffrey Stirling. This orchestra has about 65 members and rehearses every Friday morning at Church of St. William and plays four concerts each year at various venues in Fridley, Coon Rapids and Columbia Heights.

The Fridley City Band is in its 47th year of performances and is directed by Phil Raaen who is a Band Director at Southwest Junior High in Forest Lake, Minnesota.. The band performs summer concerts in the Fridley parks and at civic celebrations. The band plays about fifteen concerts each year. Rehearsals are Mondays at 7:30 p.m. at the Fridley Middle School.

Concerts by the Northeast Orchestra and Fridley City Band are ticket-free, but a voluntary contribution is requested from those attending.
