Music can bring back memories. When we hear a familiar melody we may ask ourselves, “Where have I heard that before?”  Composers have long been aware of music’s power to conjure up associations from our past.  Popular tunes often form the basis for a new composition, or pieces originally written for one instrument can find new audiences when they are transcribed for full orchestra.

This concert program offers a variety of musical “Double Takes.”  Compositions by Ralph Vaughan Williams, Edvard Grieg and Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov take well-known tunes from their native lands as the starting point for extended orchestral works.  Benjamin Britten’s musical imagination was sparked by songs written by Gioachino Rossini, which he recast for instruments alone, and Claude Debussy’s beloved piano piece, “Clair de lune” (Moonlight), was given a thoroughly idiomatic orchestral setting by the composer’s friend André Caplet.

We hope you agree that these musical inspirations are worthy of a second look!
