Louise Farrenc - Overture No. 1
Gabriel Fauré - “Dolly” Suite (orch. H. Rabaud)
Robert Schumann - Symphony No. 4
Louise Farrenc was a nineteenth-century musical pioneer. She was a virtuoso pianist and excelled as a composer. She was the only female professor at the Paris Conservatoire for the entirety of the 19th Century. The Fauré suite began life as a piano duet, but was orchestrated a few years later by his colleague Henri Rabaud. Of Schumann’s four symphonies, Symphony No. 4 was in fact a revision of the second one he wrote - chronologically speaking. Schumann extensively reworked the 1841 original and by the time it was presented to the public in 1851, it was fourth in the published sequence.
